About Coimbatore

Coimbatore, also called the ‘Manchester of India’, is the largest city of Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore is also known as Kovai is the district headquarters of the state. The city is located at 500 kms from the capital city Chennai, towards the west of Tamil Nadu state. It is a major textile centre and nerve centre of engineering activities of South India.

The city is surrounded by mountains in the west and Nilgiris in north. The district has a rich flora and fauna with a number of lakes like Singanallur Lake, Kuruchi Lake, Valankulam Lake etc. The area is a home to more than 125 varieties of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish etc.

Evolution of Current Day Coimbatore

The city of Coimbatore lying at the banks of river Noyyal has a history dating back in second century. Starting from the Chola rulers, Coimbatore changed the crown to Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Pandiyas, Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara rulers. During 10th century King Kovan reigned the city during whose reign the city was constructed. With the decline of Cholas, brief periods of the Pandyas, Madurai Sultanate, Hoysalas, Vijayanagar Empire and the Madurai Nayaks and Thanjavur Nayaks came to rule.

Later after the Third Mysore war, Coimbatore fell to the rule of British. The municipality of Coimbatore was formed in 1865. With the setting in of 19th century and with advent of industrialization here, the place evoked the growth spree in Coimbatore. Today the city stands strong as an important industrial hub of the country.

Situated along the Western Ghats, the climate of the city experiences an excellent weather throughout the year. The temperatures lie between the averages of 35.8 C to 22.4 C with a rainfall is 71 cms.

Culture and People of Coimbatore

Covering an area of 257 km2, an estimated population of the area is around 1.5 million people. The population here speaks mainly Tamil, though English is also widely spoken.Coimbatore is essentially a traditional city with multi-cultural confluences from Kerala, other cities of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.  Being a multi-cultural state, the city also accommodates people from other states like Rajasthan and Gujarat

Domicile to a number of Universities and a college, Coimbatore has a very well educated population.
