Dhyanalingam Temple Coimbatore

The temple is located at a mere distance of about 30 Km from the city of Coimbatore amidst the lush green and dense forest in Velliangiri Mountains. The temple’s name itself describes the logic behind the temple as Dhyana means Meditation and Linga means Form.

Unlike other temples of India, architecture of Dhyanalinga Temple is free from the impact of a particular religion. The Sarva Dharma Sthamba is located at the front door of the temple and consists of various symbols of different religions including Islam, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Shinto, Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism and Hinduism.

It acts as an icon of singularity. The sanctum sanctorum is covered with a large ellipsoidal dome, which is 76 feet in diameter and 33 feet in height and was constructed with bricks and cement stabilized mud mortar without concrete and steel. It is a one of a kind structure in itself. However, the lingam is made of high density black granite and is of 13 feet height.

Another marvel of its architecture is the Theerthakund, a subterranean tank located 35 feet below the temple. The tank holds a lingam immersed in water, which is made of solidified and 99.8% purified mercury, as per the legends. People usually take a dip in this water before going to the temple. In recent times another theerthakund namely Suryakund was built for gents as the first one (Chandrakund) is meant for ladies only.

Nadha Aradhana and Aumkar Meditation are two of the special activities of Dhyanalinga Temple. Both the activities are performed on a regular basis. Nadha Aradhana refers to the offering of sound (blend of singing bowls, drums, vocals and other instruments) to the Dhyanalinga. Aumkar meditation is the daily initiation to the powerful mantra “AUM” performed on a daily basis for all of the visitors of the temple.
